S'all Good!

OK, so here's the plan:

Tom and I fly into Munchen around September 8th. We travel around Bayern (Munchen, Ruhpolding, Traunstein, Salzberg, Garmish) for about a week. Then we travel the Romantische Strasse north to... Frankfurt, where we pick up Elisabeth on the 17th or 18th. The three of us travel together to Koeln, Dillenburg, Marburg and Dusseldorf (where we have family), and then on to Kassel, where Laura, our "dear daughter/sister" lives (maybe a side trip to Berlin).

Then Tom will fly home and Elisabeth and I will travel together (Heidelberg, Nurnberg, etc) for another week.

And you know what? I'm really excited about the whole thing -- as is Tom... as is Elisabeth.

So s'all good! Thanks for all your very wise counsel!

I meant to comment yesterday and got sidetracked with the kids - but all I can say is I totally relate. As a SAHM (kids are almost 7 and 2.5), formerly a "go to work and bring your son" mom, I get to a point about twice a year where I just need a break from it all and for all the reasons you describe. I just need to be me. It's so nice to see that someone else feels the same way. I'm glad you both were able to come up with a way of working it where everyone's needs are met!

FWIW my husband goes up to northern Michigan every September to play in a week-long golf tournament with friends. I didn't feel a bit guilty booking a flight out to Philly on a Thursday morning and returning on a Saturday night for some down time with friends. :-) It's not a week, but at this point I just can't be away that long nor do I want to be. I can see myself wanting an extended journey when my kids are grown. I can't wait to hear all about your trip!

Berlin? I'm a 90 minute train ride from Berlin if you're going to make a trip there. I could try to meet you there if you're up for it.

So, then welcome to Germany...

You shouldn't omit Berlin! I recommend to just sit in front of the Reichstag and feel the "power" it subtly reveals (I did it several times myself to do some "non-office" creative works, and sitting there is, I think, supremely inspiring). Give me a call and I'll be there in less than 10 minutes' time... ;-)
