What is it about our family, Italy, and volcanoes?

Back in 1980, I was in (but not stuck in) Florence when Mt. St. Helens blew… and now Aleks is in (as in, stuck in) Milan because of the volcano-with-the-unpronounceable name!

He and a few friends decided a few weeks ago to head to Venice for the weekend.  They took a flight there last Thursday, then somehow got to Milan (hey, all I get are quick, cryptic Facebook messages, like “I am in Milan, we are f**ked, not sure how to get back to Prague without spending lots of money. I don’t really know what to do but we will figure something out…”), and now, like just about everyone else in Europe, they can’t seem to get any transportation to anywhere.

So now we all just wait – like everyone else seems to be doing.

Do I have any readers in Milan who happen to run a hotel or youth hostel which happens to have a few openings?

I have a very good friend in Milan. email me the details of his needs, and I can see what she suggests. I must warn you that there is a very good chance that she will show him some very good bars in Milan...

Thanks Astro! I just had a very brief chat with Aleks on Facebook. His group got "the last hostel room" in Milan, but being the gentlemen that they are, Aleks and Jordan gave the room to the girls -- which definitely means that hostel rules must dictate that they all can't stay together -- and Aleks and Jordan are apparently spending the night at the Milan train station... with at least one bottle of wine! Maybe you should tell your friend to go join them?! ;-) They have reservations for a 20+ hour trip back to Prague on a variety of trains, beginning tomorrow EVENING -- which has resulted in about $600 being whisked out of his bank account, dammit. Until then, it looks like they'll hang out at the Milan train station.

Can you say ADVENTURE in a foreign country?!

If they need a local contact for any reason, I'm sure my friend would be willing to help if they get stuck. I just sent her an email asking if I can pass on her number to you. I'll 'friend you on Facebook' so I can send you a message....

Perfect! Thanks! I'll then give you Aleks' cell phone number. Who are you on FB?

I hope he manages to find his solution. The tourists seem to get more and more creative and there's a lot of solidarity. It'll be a story to be told afterwards though.
