"Facebook-Friending" Your Own Kids

I'm a social media whore. I'm a 52-year-old MOMMY social media whore -- which means that my own kids are my friends on Facebook. What does that mean, you ask?

It means this:

Aleks' accompanying Facebook status when he posted this photo was "Aleks is considering a career in hip-hop." Obviously!

There's Aleks, da playa man:

And Kat, the flirty girl:

Elisabeth the other flirty girl (granted, this photo is with CJ, her wonderful SO... but she's still a flirt!):

(Yes, both my daughters come by it honestly. Did I ever mention that I was a total flirt in high school? I didn't? Hmmm... wonder why I forgot to ever mention that little tidbit?!)

There's Peter the co-pilot...

And Peter the (oh gawd... guardian angel, hear me now!) motorcyclist:

(Peter, my extreme sports enthusiast, has indeed mentioned to me that, while I'm constantly warning him to be careful and to not be reckless, I am the one who broke my ankle just by stepping out my front door.)

Sometimes I find photos of my kids on Facebook and I steal them!

And some pictures are just downright silly. (Is the "fruit-in-mouth" thing the latest "YO!" look?!)

Now, of course, some disclaimers are in order. Here we go:

  • I obtained verbal or written permission from each of my kids to post these photos. Really, I promise -- I did!
  • I never comment within Facebook on my kids' Facebook photos or profiles. I learned my lesson on that one the hard way when Peter posted something about karate and I wrote on his wall that he was THE cutest five-year-old karate student and does he remember the picture of him in that adorable outfit with the yellow belt?! So... not cool, it turns out!
  • Regarding photos containing alcoholic beverages: all were drinking legally in whatever country the photo happened to be taken in. In other words, some of these photos were taken in Canada. I'm just sayin'... (and I'm not clueless).

I would die if my mom was friends with me on FB. Having said that, I fully intend to force my own kids to accept me as a friend when they learn to read and write well enough to join FB.

I think it's awesome that your kids are you facebook friends. My mom manages to read my blog, which is impressive enough considering that she didn't know how to use a computer just a few years ago.

I'd not become friends with my mom but chances are almost unexistent that she would join FB one day....hell she doesn't send an e-mail without help yet.

Great you have such an open relationship with your children though!
